Leave a Legacy

A legacy gift is made in a Will. It is a way to continue to make a positive influence on progress and change, remember a life well lived, or commemorate a loved one. By leaving a legacy you will help the Institute continue its vital work.

Many think of a gift in Will as a large and complicated donation, but it doesn’t have to be. A gift of any size will have significant impact. In most cases gifts will be tax free and can reduce any inheritance tax on your estate.

Here are the basics:

  • Include our full name and charity number: The David Hume Institute (Charity No: SC009579) CodeBase Edinburgh, Argyle House, 3 Lady Lawson Street, Edinburgh, EH3 9DR.

  • If you are creating a new Will, state that you would like to leave the David Hume Institute a gift. We recommend using a solicitor to make sure your Will is legal and valid.

  • If you already have a Will, you can add an additional gift by using a Codicil. A Codicil is a simple form which can be used to include additional gifts without drawing up a new Will. If you wish to make complex changes a new Will is usually required.
