The David Hume Institute

Presidential Address 2003

Sponsored by

Cairn Energy

Speaker

Professor Sir Alan Peacock DSC, FBA, FRSE

(Honorary President, David Hume Institute)

"The Political Economy of Sustainable Development"

to be held at The Royal Society of Edinburgh, 22-26 George Street, Edinburgh

6.00pm 2 October 2003

Professor Brian Main, Director of The David Hume Institute said: "The Institute is delighted that Professor Sir Alan Peacock, President of The David Hume Institute, will be giving the Presidential Address on 2 October. This lecture will provide a platform for discussion concerning the tensions between continuing to promote economic growth and the prospect of the long run depletion of natural resources. The argument will be extended to consider the property rights of future generations in the context of sustainable development.

The lecture will consider the validity of these claims on future resources and the extent to which they require a substantial change in the economic policies of developed countries, policies which would be bound to have a major effect on business practice."
