"The European Union and the Nation State"
Mr Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa
Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank
The Institute is honoured that the annual David Hume Lecture will be given this year by Mr Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank and a former Deputy Director General of the Bank of Italy.
Mr Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa was formerly Director General for Economic and Financial Affairs at the Commission of the European Communities and Central Director for Economic Research at the Bank of Italy. More recently he was Chairman of the Working Group on Payment Systems of the Central Banks of the European Community (European Monetary Institute), Chairman of the European Regional Committee of IOSCO and Chairman of the FESCO (Forum of the European Securities). In June 1998 he took up his present position as Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank.
He has held many other posts and is author of numerous essays and articles, including: "Money, Economic Policy and Europe", "The Road to Monetary Union in Europe: the Emperor, the Kings and the Genies" and most recently "Europe: the Impossible Status Quo"
